RE: Making Americans healthier and reducing health care costs
Dear President Clinton,
I am the CEO of Body Language Vitamin CO. and I have designed nutritional supplements since 1981. Additionally, I am a Board Certified practicing Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeon for Henry Ford Hospital. I received both my B.S. degree in Human Nutrition and a M.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. My appointment at Henry Ford Health Systems also includes a research commitment. I am funded by the National Institutes of Health for my work on aging, free radicals, antioxidants and mitochondrial DNA disorders. I have lectured and published on these subjects for more than 10 years.
There is an overwhelming body of evidence supporting the positive role of nutritional supplementation in improving the health of working Americans. A recent study found 48% fewer sick days in human subjects supplemented with specific nutrients, compared to the placebo treated group (Chandra 1992; Diplock1992).
I am convinced that if we could get people to reduce weight, quit smoking, eat right and take nutritional supplements, the annual health care expenditure could be reduced from 1.2 trillion dollars to 200 billion dollars. Although it is extremely difficult to convince patients to quit smoking, be compliant in medication use and lose weight, many Americans are more than willing to take nutritional supplements.
Unfortunately, the majority of commonly available dietary supplements are relatively poorly compounded. Which is why, in 1981, I began designing nutritional supplements for my family, friends, colleagues and professional athletes. The results, in terms of their outstanding health and an improved sense of well being, have been inspiring. Thus, late last year I started Body Language Vitamin Company.
I believe Body Language nutritional supplements can help you powerfully demonstrate your leadership in preventive medicine. Concomitantly reducing overall health care costs, reducing the number of sick days and enhancing our Country?s productivity. Increasingly, Americans expect innovative, proactive, preventive medicine from their health care providers, and I have sent letters to seven major health organizations including Kaiser Permanente, Columbia-HCA and Health Alliance Plan. Backing from you, the President of the United States of America would set a moral standard and you would lead the charge to a healthier and more productive country.
I propose making Body Language supplements available to Medicare participants for a small $3.00 - $10.00 co-pay to offset the wholesale cost to the system (wholesale cost of the patent pending anti-age supplement is $28.00/month and the wholesale cost of the antioxidant formulation is $22.00/month). The average cost of an ER visit approaches $2000.00. Consider the potential of reducing just one visit to the emergency room per Medicare subscriber.
I am working with several health care organizations in attempt to initiate a study that would enroll 1000 patients of varying age groups i.e., 20-35; 36-50; 51-65 and 66-75 with a double blind randomization such that 125 patients would receive the supplements and 125 would receive placebo. Testing could vary depending upon the cost constraints. It could be limited to tracking sick days, ER visits, primary care visits and T-cell / B-cell populations or it could include such tests as bone density and neuropsychiatric testing in the older populations etc.
Currently, these supplements are available at sixteen stores in Michigan, Henry Ford Hospital Pharmacy, one store in Ohio, New Jersey and Colorado and several Physician offices. Additionally I have many colleagues and professional athletes using the supplements including five members of the Red Wing Hockey Team.
I am confident that with your support, we could bring healthier lifestyles, a greater sense of well being and a more productive society in a short period of time.
Please contact me at your convenience to discuss the details.
Warmest personal regards,
